Director of Legal

Location: Chicago, IL | Hybrid (3 days in office, 2 days remote)

Travel: 15-25%

An established and growing energy company, specializing in propane distribution across the U.S., is seeking an experienced Director of Legal to join their leadership team. This role will offer an exciting opportunity to work closely with the executive team to manage risk, navigate complex legal challenges, and provide strategic guidance across the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts, including distribution and vendor agreements.
  • Provide legal advice on regulatory compliance, risk management, and business operations.
  • Represent the company in litigation matters, working with external counsel on road issues, customer disputes, and commercial matters.
  • Advise on compliance matters related to workers’ compensation, consumer law, and anti-bribery regulations.
  • Lead investigations at customer sites, coordinating with external counsel.
  • Work with senior leadership to shape legal strategies that support business objectives.
  • Ensure alignment of company culture with legal and ethical standards in collaboration with HR.
  • Communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders effectively.

Required Experience:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and a minimum of 10 years’ legal experience,
  • Expertise in litigation, especially in energy, distribution, or manufacturing sectors.
  • Strong experience in regulatory compliance, including anti-bribery, competition law, and workers’ compensation.
  • Background in consumer sales, distribution, transportation, or construction industries.
  • Proven ability to manage commercial contracts and advise senior leaders on legal matters.
  • Ability to communicate legal advice to non-legal teams and present confidently.
  • Experience working with a large, dispersed workforce across multiple states.
