Commercial Data Privacy & Tech Senior Associate

This leading international law firm are looking for a 6+ PQE Senior Associate to join its dynamic and growing Commercial team in Birmingham, with a specific focus on data privacy and technology law. As part of this high-performing team, you will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of matters, advising both private and public sector clients, and be at the forefront of cutting-edge legal issues, including data protection, technology contracts, and emerging issues like AI.
The Role:
As a Senior Associate, you will work closely with two partners, two senior associates, and other team members, advising clients across a range of exciting sectors. You’ll be involved in a variety of non-contentious data privacy and technology matters, with a particular focus on:
- Data Privacy & Compliance: Advising clients on data privacy regulations, including GDPR compliance, data sharing, data processing, and formulating legal strategies. You’ll play a key role in supporting clients with their data privacy obligations, both on a stand-alone basis and as part of broader commercial arrangements.
- Technology Contracts: Drafting, negotiating, and advising on a wide range of technology agreements, including SaaS licenses, IT infrastructure services, outsourcing agreements, consultancy arrangements, and contracts for IT products and services.
- Corporate Support: Assisting national corporate teams with data protection due diligence and disclosures, especially in relation to M&A transactions and corporate restructuring.
- Sector-Specific Work: Providing data privacy and technology advice to clients in key sectors such as technology, private healthcare & fertility, and social housing, where data protection and IT contracts are of central importance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Client Advisory: Provide strategic advice on data privacy compliance and technology contract negotiations, ensuring clients’ needs are met with practical, legally sound solutions.
- Contract Drafting & Negotiation: Draft and negotiate complex technology agreements, including SaaS agreements, outsourcing arrangements, and cloud service contracts.
- Business Development: Proactively participate in business development activities, including client relationship management, creating thought leadership pieces, and delivering webinars and seminars on topical issues like AI and data privacy.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the national Commercial team across Birmingham, London, and Exeter, and engage with colleagues in other practice areas to provide integrated solutions for clients.
- Mentoring & Team Leadership: Support and mentor junior lawyers in the team, while taking on increasing responsibility in managing client matters and departmental initiatives.
- Marketing & Profile Raising: Contribute to the team’s profile-raising activities, including writing articles, giving talks, and participating in firm-wide initiatives.

About You:
- 6+ PQE in data privacy, technology law, or a related commercial practice area.
- Strong technical expertise in data privacy (GDPR, data sharing, data processing) and technology contracts (SaaS, IT outsourcing, cloud solutions).
- Experience in working on non-contentious matters, including advising clients on compliance, data strategies, and technology-related agreements.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and client relationship skills.
- A proactive, business development-oriented mindset, with a passion for staying ahead of developments in the technology and data privacy sectors.
- Team player with strong communication and mentoring skills.
