Taylor Root UK Trustee Network: An interview with Nick Webb
As part of our interview series for our Trustee Network, Taylor Root Partner, Georgia Morgan-Wynne, recently spoke to Nick Webb, Group General Counsel at Stolt-Nielsen Limited, about being a Trustee for HvH ARTS.
What does your current NFP do?
HvH ARTS is a charity that gives children access to and support in the arts. Its focus is on children who would not necessarily receive such exposure and support otherwise.
Please can you share how you became a Trustee there?
I have had a long-standing interest and participation in charities that directly try to assist young adults who, because of their background/situation might not be able to access certain careers and aspects of society, that children from more ‘privileged’ backgrounds are exposed to. With this background I was asked to support the charity as it has been growing rapidly over the last few years.
What do you feel is the key role of a Trustee?
To provide guidance and support to the persons who manage the charity day to day.
Can you describe any specific skills or expertise you bring to the board as a result of your legal background?
Understanding and ‘horizon scanning’ for potential risks. Commercial input.
What experiences have been unexpected or new since becoming a Trustee?
Assumption that because I am legally trained that I can deal with any issue of a legal nature – however specialised !
What advice would you give to lawyers looking for a Trustee role?
Go for it. There are lots of charities desperate for lawyers to support them as trustees. Choose a cause you believe in and a charity that meets your cause.
What have you enjoyed most about being a Trustee?
I have been with HvH ARTS since 2020. In that time, I have witnessed young adults with the support of the charity go on to university, record albums, display art at a leading London gallery and grow in confidence every day. My role has been tiny in that, but it is great to see the charity achieving its mission.
